Can Your Skin Get Used To Products?
Does this sound familiar? You've been using a skincare product a while and noticed you aren’t seeing the results you once did when you first started using it and you thought "my product stopped working" and moved on to the next thing. Well, perhaps you shouldn't give up just yet!
The reality is our skin doesn't build up an immunity to products over time and that formula in the bottle hasn't changed (unless it's gone bad or is super old!) What does happen is you can build a tolerance to certain ingredients, think actives like an AHA/BHA, retinoids, etc. which actually is a GOOD thing so you don't experience the annoying (but expected) side effects like peeling or dryness.
What can also happen is a plateau where you stop seeing those exciting results that were visible when you first started using that new product. That doesn't mean it's not working for you anymore and it's important to remember that those ingredients are still working hard beneath the visible surface of the skin. That plateau or peak is your new normal and that is FANTASTIC!
Of course, our skin and bodies are constantly changing and our skin's needs may require different products as we age, experience stressful times, seasonal weather changes, or go through hormonal changes like pregnancy or menopause.
If you truly feel like you aren't getting the results you were looking for it just might be time for a change. You may want to bump up your exfoliation to something more potent like a higher percentage AHA product or move from retinol to prescription Tretinoin. I highly encourage you to see an esthetician for recommendations on your skin.
