Is It “Bad” To Wash Your Face In The Shower?

Is it bad to wash your face in the shower?

I have read many blogs and magazines stating "experts agree we shouldn’t wash our face in the shower.” Well as an expert myself, I actually disagree with this. I don’t see the point in making extra unnecessary steps for yourself if you don’t have the time or simply don’t want to. Most of these “issues” that people site is common sense and easily resolved.

“The Water Temperature Is Too Hot”

I do agree with this, hot water can melt the sebum in the pores and strip the skin of needed moisture. However, what is the common-sense solution? TURN THE WATER TEMPERATURE DOWN! Der. Lukewarm water is ideal for facial cleansing.

"Shampoo + Conditioner Can Clog Pores"

It’s true, hair products aren’t formulated for the face and can clog pores/irritate skin. Solution - wash your face as the last step in the shower to remove any shampoo and conditioner that may have run down your face.

“The Water Pressure Is Too Harsh”

While I agree with treating your skin gently, there are significantly much harsher things we do to our skin that are actually beneficial. For example, microdermabrasion, AHA/BHA products, scrubs, and peels. Unless your water pressure is like a power washer, it's perfectly fine.

Personally, I think it’s beneficial to wash your face in the shower. Think of it as a giant steamer that helps to loosen up dirt, sebum, and makeup in the pores to help clean the skin easier and more efficiently. It really is a personal choice if you choose to or not but know you are not doing any harm if you do.

Tips For Washing Your Face In The Shower:

Perform all of your normal steps first, as the steam will soften the sebum in the pores. Then turn the water temperature down to lukewarm and wash your face as your last step.

Double oil cleanse? First, apply cleansing oil to your skin outside the shower. Then, jump in and rinse with lukewarm water. Don’t go into your 2nd cleanse right away. Let the steam further break down sebum/makeup/dirt. Finish with a water-based cleanser.
