What Comes First - Face Oil or Moisturizer?
Ahhh, yes the great debate. There are a few schools of thought on this topic but what it really comes down to is the type of oil we are talking about and what is the best method for your skin type.
FAST ABSORBING OILS are perfect to use before moisturizers if you are trying to achieve specific skin goals from the oil(s) you have chosen. Some examples of fast-absorbing oils would be squalane, safflower, grapeseed, argan, apricot kernel, jojoba, marula, camellia seed, rosehip, etc. This method is good for all skin types.
On the flip side, SLOW ABSORBING OILS that form a layer on the surface of the skin preventing moisture loss are best applied on top of moisturizer essentially “locking in hydration.” These types of slow absorbing oils would be avocado, evening primrose, borage, etc. This would be ideal for someone with dehydrated, dry, or sensitive skin.
Orrrrrrrrr, you can just mix them! That is my personal favorite method. I put my moisturizer on the top of my hand and drop 1-2 drops of face oil.
What about just using face oil alone?
If your skin is well hydrated then you betcha! However, if you have a skin type that is dry or prone to dehydration I wouldn't recommend it. An option is to layer a hyaluronic acid serum under your face oil to provide both water and oil to the skin.
