Enzyme Exfoliants
What Are Enzymes?
Enzymes digest keratin protein which are the bonds that hold surface dead skin cells together. They work slowly and steadily, so they are gentle yet very effective.
They Are Derived From Fruits
Pumpkin ( Cucurbita Pepo)
Pineapple (Bromelain)
Cherry (Prunus Avium)
Papaya (Papain)
Pomegranate (Punica Granatum)
Benefits
Helps fade hyperpigmentation
Brightens and give the skin a glow
Smooth rough skin texture
Softens fine lines
Helps dissolve blackheads
Ideal for all skin types, even sensitive skin
Enzymes An Skincare Products
You can find enzymes in cleansers, serums, and most often, treatment masks (which are technically exfoliants but applied like a mask.) Masks, in particular, are often developed to stay on the skin for a longer period of time to work their magic. In my opinion, this is great since it takes the “slow and steady approach”, which is often gentler on the skin. While they are lovely for all skin types, enzymes are especially an excellent option for people with sensitive, reactive, or dry skin. Even someone with stubborn blackheads, enzymes can work nicely to dissolve them.
Could I Just Apply One Of These Fruits To My Face?
Mmmm, no. The amount of enzyme power needed to be an effective exfoliant for the skin won’t be found in a piece of fruit. The concentration of enzymes found in a well-formulated skincare product will be much more potent.
