Does Skincare Packaging Really Matter?
Many people assume beauty packaging doesn't matter, and it's a waste of the consumer's money, but it does matter in some cases! And of course, in other cases, it's the brand wanting the product to look more luxurious or to keep the brand aesthetic. Sometimes it is what the brand can afford or if they want to be more sustainable and eco-friendly. 🌎 So, here is a little inside peek into product development on how product developers select beauty packaging!
Some ingredients are sensitive to light and air and require non-clear, dark, or opaque UV protective packaging like amber (brown), blue, green or, mirion (black) glass bottles, tubes with a certain number of layers, or airless pumps. These packaging types will help keep the products efficacious longer and help slow down the oxidation process. Some examples would be retinoids, vitamin C serums, CBD products, sunscreens, and many face and body oils.
In other cases, the consistency of the formula will be a factor. For example, if you have a thick face cream or mask, the viscosity wouldn't lend itself to a tube, dropper, or pump, and that is why you see a lot of these types of products in jars. Keep in mind that well-formulated jar products contain preservation and antioxidant systems to prevent the formula from oxidizing faster or becoming full of mold/bacteria.
Products with beads or granules in them you will often find in jars or tubes with orifices (holes) large enough for the product to easily be dispensed but not drip out. Pump tubes can continually clog with these types of beads.
Other factors would be the typical application of use to provide the user with a good experience. An example of this is a say you have a body wash tube; a flip-top would provide a better user experience versus a screw off lid because you are wet having to take off and put back on the top plus you to place down somewhere in your shower. It's a whole thing! 😂 These are the little thoughtful behind the scene things we think of so you can have a pleasurable user experience.
