Are Moisturizers With SPF Actually Effective?
The short answer is, yes sunscreen moisturizers are effective and have enough sun protection if USED PROPERLY. ☀️ + 🧴 = ♥️
The reason being a moisturizer with SPF contains the same amount of sun filtering ingredients as a dedicated sunscreen. Besides, sunscreen of any kind is considered a "drug ingredient", is FDA regulated, and is required to undergo the same safety and effectiveness testing before they are put on the market.
Where the potential issue may lie is user error versus the product itself. Most people simply do not apply enough and/or an even layer of the SPF moisturizer to make it effective. It's also common to miss areas like the ears, eyelids, and under the eyes.
Tips for using SPF moisturizers:
Make sure you find one with broad-spectrum protection with at least an SPF 30. ⬅︎ my picks
Use 1/4 tsp for the entire face OR 1/2 tsp for the face and down the neck.
Don't forget to apply up to your hairline, your ears, and around your eye area. (SUPERGOOP makes an AMAZING SPF Eye Cream BTW!)
The bottom line, there isn't a need to use a separate sunscreen on top of your SPF moisturizer if you are USING IT CORRECTLY.
