4 Ways To Apply Tretinoin
Each of these methods comes with some pros and cons, and it's ideal to find the best method for your individual skin. FYI: Since Vitamin A (retinoic acid/Tretinoin) is a fat-soluble vitamin, it plays well with moisturizers without affecting their effectiveness.
"The Classic" 🏅
The Method: Apply to clean dry skin and follow with moisturizer after it’s dried down.
This is the standard method of application, and you receive the maximum benefits of Tretinoin. However, it does come along with more irritation, dryness, and peeling of the skin. It's not recommended for someone just starting out or for people with sensitive skin.
"The Classic Reversed" 🔄
The Method: Apply moisturizer first and then follow with Tretinoin.
Applying a layer of moisturizer first provides a buffer layer between your skin and the Tretinoin, which helps minimize the irritating side effects.
"The Sandwich" 🥪
The Method:
Moisturizer
Tretinoin
Moisturizer
This method also provides a buffer layer and an extra layer of moisture on top of the Tretinoin to minimize the irritating side effects.
"The Mixologist" 🍸
The Method: Mix a small amount of moisturizer with your Tretinoin then apply to skin.
If you don't want to deal with layering, this is an excellent method because your skin still reaps the benefits of the Tretinoin and received moisture all at the same time. (This is my preferred method lately!)
Please Note: Since Tretinoin is a topical prescription medication in the U.S., it's also a good idea to ask your provider what method they recommend.
